The desert date palm, also called balanites or Sump in Wolof (Senegal), is a thorny tree 8m to 9m tall. Its fruit is a drupe (a fleshy fruit with a stone) 3 to 4 cm in size, called the desert date.
The fruits contain a pit that encloses an oil-rich almond.
The desert date palm is very common in the Sahel, Egypt, Sudan, Arabia, and Asia.
